Obituary for Barbara June Cook Organ

Barbara June Cook Organ
March 21, 1936 – December 5, 2019
Barbara June Cook Organ was born on March 21, 1936, in Maynardville, Tennessee, at the home of her parents, Walter “Jink” Cook and Mary Aileen Perry Cook. She attended Horace Maynard High School, and following graduation in 1954, she joined the United States Air Force. While serving, she met Jerry B Organ, and the two were married in 1955. Military policy at the time dictated that women could not serve while pregnant, and Barbara relinquished her position when the two started a family. While both stateside and while serving abroad in France, Germany andTurkey, they raised a family of four children: Tonya Denise, Jerry B, Jr., Mary Beth, and Kara Mikal. In addition to being a mother, she supported her family by working as a bartender, as a secretary, by running a mom and pop grocery store, by working at Gary’s Amoco, and, in the later part of her life, by working at the New Tazewell Walmart.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Aileen Cook; her sister Rose Marie Holloway; her husband, Jerry; her granddaughter, Heather Lay; and her son-in-law, Jack Sweet.

She is survived by her children Tonya Sweet, Jerry and Sue Organ, Mary and Chester Lay, and Kara and Jason Lowe. She is also survived by her siblings, David and June Cook, Diane and Bruce Wilmoth, Dan and Joyce Cook, and Angie Sharp. She is additionally survived and much loved by a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at Perry Cemetery on Sunday, December 22, 2019, at 2:30pm, followed by a private celebration of life for the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Barbara’s name to either the Claiborne County Animal Shelter or to the Boys and Girls Club of Claiborne County.
